Operation Ghost Farms Takes on Plastic Pollution

As Earth Day dawns upon us, the battle between our planet and plastic rages on. This year’s theme, “Planet vs. Plastics,” resonates deeply with our mission at Healthy Seas. We’re gearing up for a monumental endeavor that aligns perfectly with this urgent call to action. Allow us to introduce you to Operation Ghost Farms – a mission set to reclaim our waters from the clutches of plastic pollution.

In the tranquil depths of coastal waters lie silent sentinels of an abandoned business: ghost farms, abandoned fish farms left to decay. These relics not only pose a threat to marine ecosystems and communities but also contribute significantly to the scourge of plastic pollution. Fishing nets, crafted from plastic, endure for up to 500 years, perpetuating their harmful legacy long after abandonment. But then also many other materials that are used in the structure for fish farms at sea and many tools are left abandoned to decay.

Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, Healthy Seas is proud to unveil Operation Ghost Farms – Reclaiming Waters. From May onwards, we embark on a journey to confront the menace of ghost farms and their plastic remnants. Teaming up with Hyundai Motor Europe as a dedicated sponsor, we’re committed to reclaiming waters along the Western coast of Greece.

Our multifaceted approach encompasses a series of partners and activities designed to engage communities, educate future generations, and bring about concrete and meaningful transformations in addressing the issue of plastic pollution in our waters. Surface and underwater clean-ups (with volunteers from Ghost Diving) will rid our seas of debris, while educational initiatives in schools and universities will sow the seeds of awareness among the next wave of environmental stewards.

The heart of Operation Ghost Farms lies in its promise to reclaim waters not just from plastic but from pollution, danger, and neglect. By restoring these vital ecosystems, we’re not only safeguarding marine life but also revitalizing communities that rely on these waters for tourism, sustenance and livelihood.

As we unveil our teaser video, we invite you to join us on this transformative journey. Stay tuned for updates as May heralds the beginning of a series of impactful events across our channels, podcasts, and in-person gatherings.

Together, let’s reclaim our waters, one ghost farm at a time.
