BRACENET – SAVE THE SEAS. WEAR A NET.

The pollution of the oceans has reached shocking proportions but still this problem is not getting appropriate coverage in the media. Bracenet has set itself the task of drawing attention to a serious problem which is affecting our seas and oceans: the so-called ghost nets. The discarded, lost, or abandoned fishing nets are sometimes called “ghost nets” because they continue to fish unchecked. These ghost nets can drift across the seas and oceans for up to 600 years and turn into deadly traps for anything that gets in their way. Mammals such as dolphins, seals and whales become entangled in these nets, leading to serious injuries and eventually death. Thousands of tortoises, sharks and seabirds also die each year in these nets, which remain in the marine environment for a long time. Approximately 640,000 tons of fishing nets and gear are left in our seas and oceans each year. According to a United Nations report, this is nearly ten per cent of all ocean pollution caused by humans.

Madeleine von Hohenthal, co-founder of Bracenet said: “It is the objective of Bracenet to make people aware of the pollution of the seas and oceans and inspire them to get actively involved. A very simple step for each individual and a stylish statement on your wrist.”

A FASHION ACCESSORY FOR PRESERVATION OF THE SEAS AND OCEANS

Bracenet wants to raise awareness of this serious issue in a completely new way, with a simple but innovative product idea that, in these days of social media and fashion blogs, is particularly timely. Bracenet has joined forces with ‘Healthy Seas, a Journey from Waste to Wear’ and its many partners,  to work together for cleaner and healthier seas. SAVE THE SEAS. WEAR A NET.

Bracenet makes unique wristbands from  the waste fishing nets that are collected by Healthy Seas and Ghost Fishing. The nets are cleaned and sorted by Nofir AS and then Bracenet manually produces bracelets – a stylish statement for the protection of the seas and oceans. And this is not just a symbolic gesture, because 10% of the proceeds from each wristband sold goes to support the cause of Healthy Seas, which provides a showcase for circular economy while highlighting that waste is too valuable to be wasted.

“We are very pleased to cooperate with Bracenet while raising awareness about marine litter and connecting it to the public at the same time,” said Veronika Mikos, project coordinator of Healthy Seas. “People can recognize and choose this product, which has an environmental story behind it, and with their choice of buying something good, they support our good cause. This way we can for example organize more sea clean-ups.”

EVERY BRACENET IS A STATEMENT

The colours of the Bracenets only come to light after cleaning, so we do not know in advance which colours we will be getting. Every Bracenet is given a number and the buyer can see which particular piece of the net they are holding in their hands. In combination with the matching stainless steel lock every Bracenet becomes a unique piece which is sure to attract attention. Each Bracenet means there is one less ghost net in the ocean. And this statement can now be worn as an eye-catching accessory on your wrist so that this important issue remains in the forefront of your mind and attracts the attention of others.

PROMINENT SUPPORT

Bracenet has already been able to secure prominent advocates such as Reinhold Messner, Michael Kessler and Collin Benjamin to lend their support to this project. We have embarked on an intensive exchange with them and other supporters on the next steps and further campaign ideas for the protection of the seas and oceans.
